“Objection, your honor!”
...is one of the most overused lines of dialogue uttered by TV and movie lawyers. In all the years we’ve handled family law and personal injury cases in Washington state, not once have we said those three words. At least, never in one sentence and never as dramatically as would the likes of Tom Cruise or Jim Carrey.
Back to the Future blazed the trail for movies about time travel, and continues to be referenced in popular culture. It was not the only piece of popular culture that tackled the possibilities of traveling backward and forward in time, but it stood out for its deft and creative approach on the subject.
As much as we love to idolize A-list celebrities, every now and then, we see them as mere mortals. Sometimes, we are so wrapped up in our envy of them that we take twisted pleasure in seeing them struggle. If this is not the case, perhaps our bias toward attractive people make us feel sorry for them instead.
Many people blame cola for some of the world’s ills such as obesity and tooth decay. And that’s not without basis. Colas are delicious and satisfying, but they aren’t the healthiest of drinks. And if consumers choose not to consume cans of pop, they could just not buy them from stores, much less chug them.
Office pranks can be tricky to pull off. While some workers think these can enliven a boring day at the workplace, some don’t realize they’ve gone too far until someone files a lawsuit — which is never a laughing matter.
We don’t want to discourage you from making the average workday more fun.
Frivolous medical malpractice cases leave us in stitches. We like reading about them but aren’t keen on taking on lawsuits involving operating room shenanigans and other cases that involve patients’ and medical staff’s tomfoolery.
Luckily, we’ve never had to deal with these kinds of personal injury cases in our Renton, Washington offices, but never say never! Frivolous medical negligence incidents aside, all sorts of mischief do occur inside and outside the hospital premises and may require parties to lawyer up.
Pride Month is held in June to commemorate the contributions of LGBT people all over the world. Pride Month may be long over, but the LGBT community still has many battles to fight.
“Gay rights!” is no longer a battle cry heard only during Pride Month.
The gradual reopening of some counties in Washington may do some good for the economy, but not necessarily for the public healthcare system. It’s still safest to stay at home.
It also remains to be seen whether the easing of lockdown measures will improve the relationships of couples sheltering in place to comply with Washington Governor Jay Inslee's "Stay Home, Stay Healthy" order in March.
When we purchase goods, we expect these to work as advertised and not cause harm (unless these are intended to be harmful, such as explosives and poisons). In Washington, consumers are protected by the Washington Products Liability Act (WPLA), a law that compels manufacturers and merchants to only sell reasonably safe products that are apt for their intended and unintended-but-reasonably-foreseeable uses.
Though it may be jarring to hear “Cleanup on Aisle 7!” while grocery shopping, take comfort in knowing that store management is fulfilling its duty to take care of its premises so that no one slips on their floors and hurts themselves.
While most slips and falls just result in a sore bum, some cases involve sprained ankles, broken hips, skull fractures, and contusions that lead to brain aneurysms.
